Shrines / Wile E. Coyote (American Animated Character)

Last Updated: 13/10/2023

Main Page

Wile E. Coyote was created alongside the Road Runner for Warner Brothers by American animation legends Chuck Jones and Micheal Maltese. The duo would first debut together in the 1949 cartoon Fast and Furry-ous, and have been a hit ever since. Together they have appeared in over fifty cartoons in the last seventy-odd years, over multiple directors and animation styles. Pitched and scripted originally as a satire on “chasing” or “hunting cartoons,” the Coyote and Road Runner duo immediately took off not as satire, but as one of those very cartoon duos.

The cartoons take place in the American southwest which could be anywhere in the ballpark of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The layouts for the majority of the classic Road Runner cartoons were done by Maurice Noble, who is known for very grand, detailed layouts in his work with Chuck Jones from the 1940s throughout the 1960s. Those layouts would then be beautifully painted by background artist Philip DeGuard, a layout and background artist himself with an equally impressive filmography.

Personally I believe they function best in short bursts. There are only so many times you can watch the Coyote fall from a canyon or get hit with an anvil before you get a little… Tired of it. This is probably why in larger groups of the Looney Tunes in movies and longer stories most often the two are relegated to background set decoration, or incredibly minor supporting roles.

Shrine Map

Didn’t expect that this “shrine” (if you can even call it that anymore) would need its own sitemap, but here we are. This map, unlike the one on my main homepage is meant just for a quick description of each page, use the left sidebar to navigate directly to the different pages.

Character — An incredibly opinionated writeup of the Coyote, the Road Runner, and other important elements of the cartoons.

Favorites — Some little mini-reviews and recommendations of my favorite cartoons featuring Wile E. Coyote.

Merch — A gallery of my collection of Coyote merch.

Trivia — Some little odds and ends facts that I couldn’t fit in any of the other pages in a way that’s natural.

Playlist — An exhaustive breakdown of my Coyote playlist, including songs which didn’t quite make the cut.

Gallery — My favorite screenshots, images, scans, and little icons and pixel gifs I’ve saved from gifcities. This page contains a lot of moving images which can’t be manually turned on or off.

Further Reading — A list of books and links I referenced while creating this page, as well as some other miscellaneous websites, fanart, and information about coyotes in real life.

Dedication — An emotional sendoff to this immense project, as well as a comments section! Treat it like a guest book, and/or let me know if anything here is actually incorrect!

Another thing to note is that I have fixed the image size across these pages, with no function to enlarge them while staying on the page. To get a good look at any image, they're best seen opened in a new tab for the full sized images.

Discussion about Coyote V Acme is little to none as of right now given the lack of information and the state of journalism in relation to these larger studio projects at the moment. If/when the movie comes out, the site will be updated to reflect this and my personal thoughts on the matter.
